We recently had someone state a concern that he had heard from another log home company. He mistakenly thought that if logs are less than 12" across, they would suck heat through the logs causing a draft . Here is what our GM had to say about this concern: "Ok, firstly, logs and/or wood in general, don't make a very good heat sink; although there is some heat loss with any thermal mass. If the 12" minimum was a true gage, then most log homes would not make the " cut " (pun intended). You see most log homes use round logs and whether you use flat on flat or the scribe fit technique, where the logs join together, is always less than 12". The bigger problem is air infiltration."
Here is where some education on sealants comes in. Using professional products like Sashco's Conceal®, a water-based acrylic latex textured wood caulk and Log Jam®, a standard in synthetic chinking, will keep, drafts and bugs, dust, rain and pollen out! This textured sealant recreates that old-time mortar look while sealing your log home from vermin and wind alike. We love using these products to keep your cabin cozy without compromise!
A better reason to use logs that are over 12" accross would be because you love the look. There is nothing wrong with using huge logs if this is your personal taste and fits into your budget. MSLC is a specialty company and will work with our customers to create the home of their dreams. Whether cute and cozy is your thing or stately and massive, we've got you covered!
