What do you like best about log home living?
"I went from a small trailer to this beautiful log home. I loved log homes because it's something that Nelson loved...I didn't marry him because I wanted a log home! But I now really appreciate them on my own. I love the stability and security of my home. And the natural building materials we used, the fact we were able to even use leftover pieces from other home projects Nelson was working on."
What are some of the challenges associated with decorating a log home?
"In a sense, a log home is already beautiful without décor. So I try to just enhance what is already there. It wasn't hard to incorporate my style since I love country and, natural décor. Modern styles can be done, but this is perfect for what I enjoy. Full logs might be a little more difficult, Where the D-logs are easier to clean, because it's a flat surface and you don't have the ledge that collects dust... but it also doesn't have the same massive solid feel as full log. It's just not the same!"
What are some of your favorite space saving ideas?
- "Definitely having a basement. Have the equal square footage but all on the same level wouldn't be the same. It adds so much because it feels like more space . It's also a place you can get away. It feels secluded."
- "Also, the sliding barn doors we have on the bathroom. Very space efficient. Sometime a pocket door won't always work – and these are way cuter and more solid. You can keep these doors flush with the wall. Very convenient."
- "I like recess lighting. I definitely think it's important to have them on dimmer switches. But that's just me. I don't like intrusive lighting, but subdued and calm and peaceful lighting. Having good lighting near the kitchen sink is also important. It's not enjoyable to do dishes in the winter under poor lighting."
- "And, I enjoy thrifting! Reusing stuff is "green" friendly, and pocket-book friendly. We were able to find an amazing pendant light at a thrift store that is so much more quality made than what you find at your normal appliance store. Which has made it harder to find lights to match the quality! I've found some neat ideas on how to make your own lights that I'd like to try." To be continued...
"When designing your home, taking out hallways is a good idea. Hallways are so inefficient. Some people don't care. But I like to have every space efficient and resourceful.
Tell us about yourself....
"I am a Christian, an abolitionist, a health nut, and a writer. I work at a natural health clinic, love good literature, think my boyfriend is the most amazing man alive, and am starting school this spring to get my diploma in holistic health. I also love American Sign Language, children and hiking. What's left of my time I spend in my adorable little log cabin off the river in Clark Fork".
What do you appreciate about MSLC?
"I love that MSLC is a Christian business, and the administration is unashamed of that. I appreciate that Nelson is dedicated to honesty, quality and his customers. I think the general manager is a pretty amazing guy to work with (my dad!), and all the guys have been a lot of fun to get to know. I've felt pretty proud to be considered part of the team. I've always been a fan of log homes, but working here has given me a greater admiration for them!"
What is your strongest contribution to MSLC?
"Possibly my organizational and writing skills. It's been great helping Dad in the office, and also researching for our awesome marketing manager (who also happens to be my cute little mom). Helping with social media has been a great challenge as I learn more about log home construction, and it's been fun getting to know everyone on the team."

The Kind of Company I Work For
This is a peek of one of our business meetings. Every few weeks, we start the day off with a huge breakfast provided and served by Nelson & Sarah and enjoyed by the whole crew and marketing team. This "family style" meeting is where Nelson and Eddie share progress of the business & projects and where the rest of us can address any questions or concerns. What a blessing to be a part of this!
