Prospectors who went to Alaska in the 1890's to seek gold, took sourdough starters with them in knapsacks? These miners ate so much bread, that they came to be known as Sourdoughs! A term now associated with the backwoodsman in general.
Simple Sourdough Starter:
Combine dry ingredients in a large ceramic or glass bowl. Gradually add warm water; mix well until smooth. Cover with kitchen towel or cheese cloth and let stand in warm place for 3 days.
